We used to be known as simply First Unity's bookstore. And for more than 20 years, this small room just off the church lobby held the Unity classics, Daily Words, Bibles, and some cards and small gifts. Business was mainly on Sunday mornings, and the customers were mostly members of the church. Physically, we were cocooned in the center of the building, with neither windows nor doors to the outside.

In the late 1980s and early 90s, there was evidence of a world awakening, as Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson appeared on the scene, followed by James Redfield's The Celestine Prophecy in 1995. The Dead Sea Scrolls were made public, the energy body was revealed, our connection to Mother Earth and ancient cultures was re-discovered, and Oprah talked about meditation. Yes, the Unity/New Thought message was out-of-the-closet, but our bookstore was still nestled in its 300-plus sq. ft. nook inside the church. And it was bursting at the seams.

In the meantime, an apparently unrelated set of circumstances in 1998 brought about First Unity's purchase of a parcel of land connected to the church property in St. Petersburg. The annex contained two buildings. One was to be used for a church school, and the other building, a small 4-unit strip center, became rental property and was leased out.

Sometime in early 2005, a thought arose & why not move our bookstore into the building on 4th Street, one of St. Petersburg's busiest commercial streets, and create a place to introduce Unity to the community? With the implementation of prayers and principles, the idea almost took itself into manifestation. Leases, city ordinances, funding, design expertise, congregation approval - all questions and obstacles fell away. Within months, the construction was finished and our little bookstore transformed into a new being & Wings took wings!
